Caution: I brake for gams. This Gil Elvgren postcard from The Missive Maven arrived just in time for this week’s Postcard Friendship Friday. I don’t know where this young lady’s going, but I’m sure I’d go out of my way to get her to her destination.
Special bonus: the vintage stamps honoring Revolutionary-era artist Benjamin West (that’s his own self-portrait on the stamp), and poets Paul Laurence Dunbar and Sidney Lanier.
I especially couldn’t help but notice Sidney Lanier, living as I do near the shores of Lake Lanier. One of Georgia’s favorite Confederate sons, Lanier died in 1881 at the age of 39 from tuberculosis, which he contracted while a prisoner of war.
Be sure to check out the other blogs celebrating Postcard Friendship Friday.
Update 17 August 2009: This postcard was also blogged by the Maven.

What a fun card! A dot.com card done in 1940′s (?)style. Crafty!

I guess my Photoshop skills are too good; the “dot com” logo is just my watermark, in case some other website gets “crafty” about using my site’s images.

I am so tickled that you notice and appreciate my vintage stamps. I don’t really know who some of these people are myself – did you know Sydney Lanier and Benjamin West when this postcard arrived, or did you do excellent research to share the info with your blog readers once you saw the stamps?

I think I first encountered West and Dunbar in junior high, but I had never heard of Sidney Lanier until I moved to Georgia, and settled near Lake Sidney Lanier, an artificial lake which is the main water supply for the greater Atlanta area, as well as parts of Florida and Alabama. Naturally, my curiosity got the better of me and I had looked him up long ago. My grandson attended Lanier Elementary School as well.

Yes, I can see she will have no problem getting exactly where she wants to be.
