Femme à l’ombrelle

Shilling for The Travelers

No, she’s not shilling for The Travelers. This is one of two postcards that arrived yesterday from Kris, featuring Femme à l’ombrelle (Woman with Umbrella), an 1880 watercolor by Marie Bracquemond (French, 1840-1916). According to the card, the original is 14 x 10½ inches and is privately owned.

Kris writes that “there is something about a woman and an umbrella; maybe it’s the futile attempt to stay dry.” Clearly Kris is a man suffering from the pernicious ravages of Damsel in Distress Syndrome, a latter-day Galahad — at least, I thought so, until I took a look at his other postcard. It’s shocking, but it’s in the public interest to learn what happens after the rescue.
