Meet Me at the Vaudeville

Why Johnny Came Marching Home

The mysterious F.W.E sent this patriotic World War I card from Brooklyn, New York to Miss Rose, who lived in the hamlet of Livingston Manor, in Sullivan County, New York. The message reads:

Meet me at the Vaudeville in Liberty Sat. night  F.W.E ?

"Meet Me Saturday Night"

The Vaudeville in Liberty was the famous Vaudeville theater located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a good distance from Livingston Manor. The card was sent on Friday, so any suggestion of a get-together that far away was probably a joke.

Christine loves antique postcards because they preserve evidence of everyday life as well as celebrations and sad events. To her, looking at an old postcard is like holding a single piece of a puzzle; we have to imagine the rest. View more of her collection at The Daily Postcard.

  1. Hmm. Maybe FWE plans on being in Pittsburgh the following week, and Miss Rose is aware of this. A missing piece of the puzzle?
