Danaë, by Evgeny Tonkikh
From Marina in Moscow comes this stunning postcard of “Danaë”, a 1999 oil-on-canvas by Russian artist Evgeny Tonkikh. This Danaë doesn’t appear to be she from Greek mythology, but rather a nymph of the artist’s own making.
Finding information on the artist proved difficult, as his name seems to be a surprisingly common one. What little information I could find comes from the site of the postcard seller (where you can see more works by Evgeny Tonkikh), where his favorite subjects are described as “still life, portrait, historical, mythological, and fantasy fiction”. They also make mention of landscapes, “including the sea, one of his favorite themes”. Hence the seashells.
